Insights from students in DePauw University's MUS197c, Gender and Music, as we explore the intersections between music and gender in a variety of cultural and historical contexts.
I think he may have a had a split personality. Do you think he was psychologically ill or he was just trying to express himself through a different light? He could be like Nicki Minaj, who has an alter ego called Roman, or like Beyonce' whose stage alter ego is Sasha Fierce.
This is an amazing video. I really like the music you selected. This video clearly introduced Neuwirth & Wurst's background and his gender role. Do you know why there are two hearts beating in his chest? Why he chose Wurst to present himself?
I really enjoyed this video because it depicts a story that I've only ever seen in movies, never in real life. I wonder how he is able to distinguish the two identities and if they ever collide. I also wonder if the two identities developed because he was sad about not being accepted or if he just wanted to live two separate lives. Do you think that Neuwirt and Wurst live this way as a publicity stunt?
I found the use of music to be especially useful for this because of the completely different sound you get from both performers. The information was very well delivered that way. When was it that Neuwirth began to perform as Wurst? I think that it would be important to know because it could be a time when Neuwirth was struggling with his own identity, being another reason Wurst came to be.
