Insights from students in DePauw University's MUS197c, Gender and Music, as we explore the intersections between music and gender in a variety of cultural and historical contexts.
Love the video! Aretha has always been a classic! I liked how you kept a chronological order of her life and accomplishments through the video. An interesting thing that I didn't know was how early she had kids! I wonder how this affected her career and maturity even though her grandmother helped. Also, because of the time period of her biggest successes, how did her success, music and inspiration impact the world of gender and racial discrimination (if at all)?
I really liked your narration! I think it benefited the video greatly. Aretha Franklin was an amazing person and singer and will forever be remembered. I am sure that she inspired many young women to take control of their lives in a time period when women were not thought of as such. Respect is still one of my favorite songs today. But I was wondering if she impacted the African-American community at that time as well?
I like the voice over a lot. it makes it more unique. why do you think aretha had such an impact on people with her music though? was it just the lyrics and message from her songs or was she an overall influential person?
