Insights from students in DePauw University's MUS197c, Gender and Music, as we explore the intersections between music and gender in a variety of cultural and historical contexts.
What was the root of his substance abuse? Did his upbringing have anything to do with it? I really like the angle you took with this project, especially since I had not previously known much about Ol' Dirty Bastard. The visual effects and video style you had were clear and informative, too.
Alex, I think that Dirty's substance abuse had everything to do with his community. Growing up in a poor area of Brooklyn, New York, there would be lots of access to drugs. After he started making money and living the thug life, he was better able to support those habits.
I had never heard of Ol' Dirty Bastard before your video and I am very intrigued. I'm glad you put that particular song in your video with the lyrics so that we could be more aware of how he is in real life. Was he using for a long time before his death?
From what I've read, I would say that Dirty's drug abuse had been a problem for a long time. His entire career was based on his substance abuse and there are plenty of interviews where you can see that he was under the influence. His arrests for drug use also started early in his career.
My favorite thing about the video was the lyrics being shown on screen as the song was playing. I think it really helped bring across the point of what Ol' Dirty Bastard was about. Did he ever clash with anyone in Wu-tang clan? Were all critics just as favorable as the ones shown?
I'm not sure about any clashes within the Wu- Tang Clan. From what I've observed, they seemed to be a pretty close- knit group. There were PLENTY of negative critics. May people thought that Dirty and the Clan's music was too violent and misogynistic for children to listen to.
I liked how you put in all of his songs, especially the songs with vulgar lyrics to really show his songs. Do you think he means the things that he says in his songs, or is it a way to get attention?
I honestly think that Dirty was genuine in expressing his feelings in his music. I don't think that it was all a show. I watched many interviews where he stated that his material for music came from his own experience. The people who worked around him described him as "raw" and "unpredictable" because they believed that he was actually expressing his own feelings.
Do you think there is a specific reason why his lyrics are so vulgar and harsh? especially towards women? I also like how your music and background sound fits in with the video. it looks really well put together.
I think that Dirty's background contributed to the vulgarity of his music. Growing up in Brooklyn had to bring many harsh experiences, many that he speaks of in interviews, which could have shaped his thoughts. I also think that it's possible that Dirty may have experienced some relationships gone wrong, fueling his anger towards women.
