Insights from students in DePauw University's MUS197c, Gender and Music, as we explore the intersections between music and gender in a variety of cultural and historical contexts.
What do you think Madonna thought about her influence on other teenagers in similar situations as her? The pictures and video style meshed well together, and the volume level of your narration was loud and clear, too.
The theme for this project was perfect for Madonna! I loved your pictures and that you spoke in the video instead of just putting words on the screen. Do you know how her music is doing today? Is she still influencing the youth of our society today?
I like the way the theme related to perfectly with Madonna's personality. Do you think Madonna knew that her lack of a mother figure was the reason for her acting so seductively as she was doing it, or do you think it's something that she realized later in life?
I really liked your narration and it was well done. Madonna is still putting out hit singles today, and she is growing more and more popular. She is always pushing the limits and doing things that have never been done before. It was mentioned in class that Madonna used voguing in one of her music videos. How did she incorporate that in and what was her inspiration for doing so?
Alex- I think Madonna at first liked how influential she was because it meant that she was gaining the attention she needed to become famous. However, once she had her own kid, I don't think she liked it as much because she didn't want her own daughter to behave that way.
Caroline- Her music is still famous! however i think due to the time of the peak of her career, her audience is primarily adult.
Soph- I think Madonna subconsciously knew all along what she was doing. I think her rebellion and ways of acting were a way of hiding her pain of losing her mother. Because she was so young when it happened, she has very little time she could remember with her mother and so that in itself is enough to change the behavior of a girl.
Liz- Her style in general is so unique and out there. She incorporates everything in her own way, and its always so bold and different than what is expected of her. Voguing is just one of them. Her goal is to be as different, bold, and unexpected as she can be. She pushes limits in almost all of her work.
